Summary

RABBIT CORNEAS WERE FROZEN WITH THE CRYOPROTECTANT POLYETHYLENE OXIDE-400. THE EFFECT OF A RANGE OF CONCENTRATIONS (6, 8, 10, 12 AND 15%) WAS INVESTIGATED. INTEGRITY OF THE CORNEAL ENDOTHELIAL CELLS WAS EVALUATED BY SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY AND TRYPAN BLUE STAINING. THE PRESENCE OF 1 PEO-400 IN THE PROTECTIVE MEDIUM WAS EFFECTIVE IN MINIMISING CHANGES TO THE INTEGRITY OF THE CORNEAL ENDOTHELIUM DURING FREEZING-THAWING PROCEDURES.
