Current situation and evolution of standards on the use of hydrocarbon refrigerants in A/C, heat pump and refrigeration equipment.

Author(s) : CORBERÁN J. M., GÓMEZ B., COLBOURNE D., et al.

Summary

The development of international and European standards for heat pumps and air conditioners is leading to considerable restrictions for the use of flammable hydrocarbon refrigerants (HC) despite the existence of a great number of different points of view in this field. The current high activity of this development is making necessary the agreement between different parts like manufacturers, final users and policy makers. This paper intends to comment upon the current situation and explain the main differences among the different published and draft International and European standards for A/C, heat pump and refrigeration equipment with HC refrigerants. The current problem of availability of commercial size hermetic compressors for HCs is also commented on.
