Summary

ICE OF POLAR ICE-CAPS HAS BEEN AFFECTED BY MAN'S IMPACT ON THE COMPOSITION OF THE ATMOSPHERE AND, PARTICULARLY, ON THE CONCENTRATIONS IN GREENHOUSE GASES, SUCH AS CARBON DIOXIDE AND METHANE. BY DRILLING AT A DEPTH OF MORE THAN 2 KILOMETERS, GLACIOLOGISTS WERE ABLE TO GATHER HISTORICAL DATA: DURING THE LAST 150,000 YEARS, THE < WARM > AND < COLD > OF THE INTERGLACIAL AND GLACIAL PERIODS HAVE BEEN GOVERNED BY BOTH THE PERIODIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MOVEMENT OF THE EARTH AROUND THE SUN AND BY THE VARYING CONCENTRATIONS OF GREENHOUSE GASES IN AIR. DATA ARE GIVEN ON THE POTENTIAL EFFECT OF HUMAN EMISSIONS ON THE CLIMATE IN THE FOLLOWING CENTURY.
