Summary

Defrost sensors save energy by starting a defrost cycle only when there is a demand for defrosting. In the article the most common principles of operation of defrost sensors, as applied in the Netherlands, are described. A questionnaire showed that many users are not satisfied with the practical operation of defrost sensors. After analysis of the problems that were encountered, a number of suggestions is made for more reliable operation. It seems that in the Netherlands there are hardly any practical measurements made of the energy savings from defrost sensors.
