Summary
Current leads for superconducting magnets contribute significantly to the heat load on the cryogenic system due to their ohmic resistance in the temperature range above the transition temperature. The thermodynamic optimization of current leads requires cooling along their entire length that cannot be achieved with cryocoolers.
Cryogenic mixed-refrigerant cycles (CMRC) based on the Joule-Thomson effect offer a low-cost, highly efficient and scalable technology ideally suited for the cooling of current leads. The internal heat exchanger used in the Linde-Hampson cycle can combine both functions of the recuperator and the electrical conductor. This concept of mixed-refrigerant cooled current leads has the potential to reduce the energy consumption due to the current leads by about 2/3 compared to conduction cooling.
Prototypes of micro-structured current leads cooled by mixed-refrigerants have been developed at KIT and tested on their thermal behaviour. The new Compact Accelerator Systems Test Stand (COMPASS) will provide the conditions to further develop this technology, supplying electrical currents from a few hundred A up to 10 kA. This paper gives an overview of the design and dimensioning of COMPASS and highlights the flexibility of the test stand, especially with respect to the broad power and temperature range of the mixed-refrigerant cycles.
