Design of heat exchangers for CO2: heat pump water heaters.

Author(s) : RIEBERER R., HALOZAN H.

Summary

Using design models developed at the Institute ofr Thermal Engineering, Austria, water/CO2 and air/CO2 heat exchangers are being optimized with special respect to the property data of this refrigerant. A test rig of a heat pump water heater has been designed. The condenser is a counter-flow water/CO2 heat exchanger. The high density of the refrigerant results in a small tube diameter on the CO2 side; finned tubes are used to increase the heat transfer on the water side. The evaporator is similar to the condenser. The influence of the tube diameter and the mass velocity, respectively, on the two-phase heat transfer coefficient is very high. Optimizations of tube diameters are necessary.
