Development of a breadboard prototype carbon dioxide environmental control unit.

Summary

A breadboard prototype transcritical carbon dioxide (CO2) environmental control unit (ECU) has been designed and built for US Army in order to investigate the performance potential of CO2 in both air-conditioning and heat pumping cycles. A reciprocating semi-hermetic compressor was used. The evaporator and gas cooler were both designed using microchannel technology. The refrigerant will follow cross-counterflow paths with respect to the airflow direction in order to maximize effectiveness. Details of system design are presented.
