Development of a passenger car air conditioning pulldown simulation tool.

Author(s) : JONES M.

Summary

In the field of automotive HVAC system engineering, 3D CFD and 1D network analysis techniques are now widely used, particularly with respect to the ventilation/interior airflow system and heater circuit coolant flow. Some useful AC system modelling modules are also now becoming available. However, there has not been a simple and cost-effective means of combining the available tools in order to simulate transient passenger cabin AC pulldown. Specifically, the paper describes the development of a passenger compartment thermal model which can be easily linked to existing or new 1D airflow models. The resulting capability enables the prediction of cabin interior air temperatures over a typical AC test cycle including hot solar soak, dynamic pulldown and engine idling conditions.
