Development of an HFC refrigerant compatible compressor lubricant and retrofit of existing CFC systems to HFC refrigerants.

Author(s) : GREIG B.

Summary

The paper describes a simple method to replace R12 by R134a in an existing plant. This is made possible by a British company's development of a synthetic polyolester-based lubricant called Icematic SW. This lubricant is also R12 compatible. A procedure is described which entails the isolation of the compressor within the circuit, the removal of the original oil and its replacement by Icematic SW. Once the acceptable Icematic SW oil level is attained through the circuit through repeat oil changes, the R12 is replaced by R134a.
