Summary
This book describes research programmes intended to improve the competitiveness of Finnish industry in exploitation of natural resources in arctic areas, by solving a number of problems that had plagued Northern shipbuilders and designers of arctic offshore facilities: the performance of ships in ice, the effect of ice on structures, and the special needs of construction projects in the arctic offshore environment. The application of concrete in arctic structures was thoroughly studied, and models were developed. Improvements in construction materials technology and arctic logistics are also reported.
