Summary

ABOUT 3 MILLION TONNES OF MEAT IS TRANSPORTED EACH YEAR IN THE SOVIET UNION IN SUPPLYING SAUSAGE PRODUCTION FACILITIES. A METHOD OF TRANSPORTING FROZEN MEAT (IN BLOCKS PLACED ON PALLETS) IS PRESENTED WHICH ELIMINATES THE DISADVANTAGES OF THE IRREGULAR FORMS, SIZES AND WEIGHTS OF CARCASSES, SIDES AND QUARTERS. VARIOUS STACKING METHODS ARE DESCRIBED, BOTH FOR THE BLOCKS AND FOR THE STACKS THEMSELVES INSIDE RAILWAY CARS. ADVANTAGES LISTED ARE: REDUCED WEIGHT LOSS (BY MEANS OF QUICK FREEZINGOF THE BLOCKS), REDUCED DEMAND IN REFRIGERATION (BOTH FOR FREEZING AND STORAGE), AND MORE EFFECTIVE USE OF TRANSPOR. THE METHODS PRESENTED ARE THE RESULTS OF EXPERIMENTS CARRIED OUT FROM 1986 TO 1988. M. C.
