Summary

MILK TEMPERATURE WAS MONITORED DURING NORMAL DISTRIBUTION FROM THE DAIRY IN AN INSULATED LORRY, WITH OR WITHOUT A PLASTIC GUARD TO COVER THE REAR OPENING DURING UNLOADING. THE STUDY WAS CARRIED OUT IN THE SUMMER: AVERAGE TEMPERATURE 293-298 K (20-25 DEG C). IN A FULL LORRY WITH A PLASTIC GUARD, AVERAGE TEMPERATURE INCREASE IN MILK WAS 0.6 AND 0.3 K/H IN TOP AND BOTTOM CARTONS, RESPECTIVELY AND 0.5 K/H WHEN THE LORRY WAS HALF-FULL. TEMPERATURE IN ALL SAMPLES COMPLIED WITH THE STANDARD OF LOWER THAN 280 K (7 DEG C). WITHOUT A GUARD, AVER-AGE TEMPERATURE INCREASE WAS 1 K/H AND SAMPLE TEMPERATURE WAS HIGHER THAN 280 K AT THE END OF THE DISTRIBUTION PERIOD. (DAIRY SCI. ABSTR., GB., 49, N 3, 1987/03, 180, 1540.
