Disease transmission with modified-atmosphere packaged leeks and potatoes.

Summary

Investigations have been carried out on the change in the disease and microbial loading for the packaging of dressed and undressed leeks (variety, Autumn Mammoth "Snowstars"). The undressed leeks were shown to have higher microbial loadings after seven days at two different storage temperatures and two different periods between harvest and packaging. Investigations were also carried out into the transmission of Erwinia in packaged potatoes, some of which had been scuffed. At 4 deg C there was a much higher prevalence of Erwinia in scuffed rather than unscuffed tubers.
