Summary

In this study, we reported the risk assessment evaluation of the HFO-1123 containing refrigerant mixture that was previously developed as an alternative to HFC-32 and R410A refrigerants. Based on conventional knowledge, the refrigerants containing HFO-1123 might inherent safety risk of an autocatalytic disproportionation reaction. In order to address this issue, we evaluated the probability of air conditioner unit failure by this reaction process using the the risk assessment technique that was previously use for HFC-32.
Disproportionation reaction occurs when the refrigerant is exposed to an ignition source under hightemperature and high-pressure conditions similar to the conditions inside the compressor unit. We performed a risk assessment of disproportionation of a HFO-1123/HFC-32 refrigerant mixture (40% /60% by weight). Our study concluded that by adding additional safety measures such as manual recovery unit, the safety risk of HFO-1123/HFC-32 refrigerant mixture at the same level of HFC-32 refrigerant.
