DYNAMIC CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE FOR APPLE STORAGE.

Summary

DYNAMIC CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE (DCA) HAS BEEN APPLIED FROM 1975 IN ORDER TO STUDY THE EFFECT OF CO2 CONCENTRATIONS ON THE RIPENING OF GOLDEN DELICIOUS APPLES. TEMPERATURE, O2 CONCENTRATION AND RELATIVE HUMIDITY WERE CONSTANT: 275 K (2 DEG C), 3% AND 98%, RESPECTIVELY. CO2 CONCENTRATION INCREASED FROM 0% THE FIRST MONTH, 2% THE SECOND MONTH TO 5% FROM THE THIRD MONTH. CONVENTIONAL CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE WAS COMPARED WITH DCA. PRETREAMENT WITH CO2 WAS TESTED FOR 10 DAYS. DCA PRETREATMENT EFFICIENTLY INHIBITS THE SOFTENING OF PULP, REDUCES MASS LOSSES AND ROTTING, EXTENDING THE SELF-LIFE OF APPLES BY ONE MONTH AT LEAST.
