Improvement in the storage quality of apples in the UK by the use of 1-MCP (SmartFresh).

Author(s) : JOHNSON D. S.

Summary

'Cox's Orange Pippin' and 'Bramley's seedling' apples were picked on 3 occasions and treated with 1-MCP prior to storage in air and controlled atmosphere (CA). For each cultivar, the first 2 picks were within the commercial period for long-term storage whereas the third picks were 2 weeks later than advised for storage. 1-MCP was applied at 500 and 1000 nL/L for 12 h at 20°C or 24 h at 3.5°C. Fruit quality was assessed after 60, 120 and 180 days ('Cox') or after 90, 180 and 270 days ('Bramley') of air and CA storage followed by a further 7 days in air at 20°C.
