RESPIRATION OF APPLES DURING STORAGE AS A FUNCTION OF DIFFERENT ATMOSPHERES AND TEMPERATURES.

Author(s) : BOHLING H., HANSEN H.

Summary

THREE APPLE VARIETIES < GOLDEN DELICIOUS >, < SCHONER VON BOSKOOP > AND < GLOSTER 69 > WERE STORED IN NORMAL AND IN CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERES OF DIFFERENT COMPOSITION (2-5% CO2; 1-4% O2 ) AT 274, 275.5 AND 276.5 K (1, 2.5 AND 3.5 DEG C). THE RESPIRATION ACTIVITY OF < GOLDEN DELICIOUS > WAS GREATER THAN THAT OF < BOSKOOP > AND SUBSTANTIALLY GREATER THAN THAT OF < GLOSTER >. THE RESPIRATION REDUCTION ACHIEVABLE THROUGH CA WAS 60 TO 70%. A DECREASE OF THE TEMPERATURE FROM 276.5 TO 274 K LED PRIMARILY IN < GOLDEN DELICIOUS > TO A DISTINCT REDUCTION OF THE RESPIRATION. THE RESPIRATION QUOTIENT FLUCTUATED BETWEEN 1.03 AND 1.15, AND WAS NOT INFLUENCED NEITHER BY THE DIFFERENT ATMOSPHERES NOR BY THE DIFFERENT TEMPERATURES.
