Summary
Subjective experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of a streamer plasma air purifier on perceived air quality, SBS symptoms and performance of office work during 5-hour exposure with 32 recruited subjects exposed in the field laboratory with building materials at a realistic level of air pollution. Intensity of SBS symptoms were indicated using visual-analogue scales. Subjects’ performance was evaluated with several computer tasks. The results show that operation of air purifier significantly improved perceived air quality assessed upon entering the room polluted by building materials both when human bioeffluents were absent and present. The estimated clean air delivery rate by the air purifier was 108-208 L/s or 3.4-6.6 h-1 in the test room of 113 m3 (outdoor air supply rate was 36L/s or air change of 1.2 h-1). Subjectively reported intensities of SBS symptoms were generally not significantly different between condition with the air purifier in operation and the purifier turned off. When the air purifier was in operation, subjects made significantly less errors when performing arithmetical calculations. The number of typing errors was also lower when the air purifier was in operation but the effect was not statistically significant. There were no significant differences in number of addition or multiplication units completed or characters typed by the subjects when the purifier was on or off. The reasons, among others, may include too short exposure compared to changes in air quality created by the air purifier. Long-term field evaluations would be needed.
