Effect of an internal heat exchanger on the performance of a R134a mobile air-conditioning system.

Author(s) : LI X. Z., CHE J., HRNJAK P.

Summary

The paper presents an analysis of the role and effect of the internal heat exchanger (suction line heat exchanger) on performance (capacity and COP) of R134a mobile air-conditioning systems. Cycle analysis presented at the beginning is supported by experimental results. The system examined experimentally is a typical R134a air conditioning system for a medium size car. Compressor is reciprocating, condenser with microchannel tubes and evaporator is laminated plate/fin with single tank. Four cases were explored: baseline (without internal heat exchanger) and three others with different internal heat exchangers. Results demonstrate increases in capacity up to 7% and efficiency up to 7% compared with a baseline system (without internal heat exchanger) and COP and capacity maximizing exit quality in the range 0.98 to 1.0. Results also emphasize the role of pressure drop on the suction side.
