Summary

Apples were irradiated by a cobalt-60 radiation source (0, 1 and 2.5 kilogray doses) then stored for 6 weeks at 16 deg C. The rate of autolysis of apple cortex of cell wall materials increased significantly (P not lower than 0.05) as a function of increasing radiation dose (1-2.5 kilograys) and storage time. Empire apple cultivar was more sensitive to irradiation and less storable than Golden Delicious cultivar. Detailed information on each cultivar is given.
