Summary

THE EVOLUTION OF CARBON DIOXIDE AND OXYGEN EXCHANGES WAS STUDIED COMPARATIVELY FOR 3 DAYS AT 293 K (20 DEG C) FOLLOWING VARIOUS PERIODS (1, 5 AND 10 DAYS) AT CHILLING [277 K (4 DEG C)] OR STORAGE [285 K (12 DEG C)] TEMPERATURE. A SHORT RISE OF THESE EXCHANGES WAS OBSERVED, MUCH MORE ACCENTUATED IN FRUIT FROM 277 K THAN THAT FROM 285 K AND REPRESENTATIVE OF A RESPIRATORY RESPONSE. ITS PATTERN WAS CHANGED BY INTERNAL AIR FLUSHING OF BANANAS. CHANGES EXHIBITED BY CHILLED FRUIT SUGGEST THAT THE ALTERNATIVE PATHWAY WAS OPERATING DURING THE RESPIRATORY BURST.
