Elementary analysis of influence of groundwater advection on the performance of a geothermal heat exchanger through experiment.

Summary

As an environment friendly and energy-efficient system, ground-source heat pump (GSHP) system is widely used in many countries. However, the extent of influence that groundwater advection has on the performance of geothermal heat exchanger (GHE) is still unknown by far, although a lot of researchers have realized its importance and some of them have made elementary studies. For that, the experiment about GHE area under coupled heat conduction and groundwater advection is implemented. Through experiments, it is clarified the influence of GHE cooling load on unsaturated and saturated soil temperature contours without groundwater flow. Furthermore, for saturated soil with groundwater flow, the impacts of GHE cooling load, groundwater flow rate, and groundwater temperature are also clear. Then from the experimental results, it can be concluded that whether the groundwater exists or not should be considered during the course of design or calculation of GSHP system. Furthermore, the more groundwater velocity, the bigger influence. Finally, it is suggested that if the GSHP system is to be used in the zones with more cooling loads in summer than heating loads in winter, either adopting hybrid GSHP with cooling tower or laying the GHE in the zones with high groundwater flow rate is suggested for system's long-term efficient operation.
