Summary

MOST OF THE MEMBER STATES OF THE EEC HAVE ENCOURAGED ENERGY SAVING IN THEIR DAIRY INDUSTRIES. BRITAIN HAS LAGGED WELL BEHIND THE LEADERS. SAVINGS HAVE BEEN MADE, IN FRENCH DAIRIES IN PARTICULAR, BY THE USE OF MECHANICAL VAPOUR RECOMPRESSION IN MULTI-STAGE EVAPORATION MILK DRYING PLANT AND IN THE USE OF REVERSE OSMOSIS FOR CONCENTRATION, PREFERABLY BEFORE TRANSPORT. IT IS ALSO SUGGESTED THAT COMBINED HEAT AND POWER PLANT CAN PRODUCE A SAVING AND THAT CHEAP ELECTRICITY TARRIFFS CAN BE UTILISED WITH ICE BANKS TO HOLD-OVER REFRIGERATION CAPACITY. D.W.H.
