Summary

For freeze dryers used in pharmaceutical applications, the direct expansion type of cold trap is an attractive design with several advantages over other methods. However, one disadvantage is the difficulty of achieving accurate and reproducible control of cold trap coil temperatures and ensuring a reliable and consistent flow of refrigerant and oil through the system during long periods of secondary drying. On a large pharmaceutical freeze dryer, a method of control which overcomes these deficiencies was developed.
