Summary
This book deals with the interacting influences of fossil-fuel use and the environment, and the possibilities that renewable energy sources offer to mankind. For the first time, Slovenian knowledge and technologies are presented alongside those of other countries. Some of these technologies such as hydro energy, solar energy and biomass have been used in Slovenia for many years. It is divided into 22 chapters: The first five chapters cover non-renewable energy sources and present a review of the conditions in the environment and in the atmosphere. The importance of energy supply to mankind's evolution and the energy transformations of fossil and nuclear fuels are described. Each fuel is discussed in terms of its influence to the environment and the measures and technologies for its reduction are described. Subsequent chapters describe heat transfer with an emphasis on the optical properties of various materials as well as radiant heat transfer. The sun is used as an example of a primary energy source and the geometric relationships and the methods for solar-radiation calculations are described. Other chapters are devoted to the conversion of solar, geothermal and planetary energy into useful forms. In each of these chapters, the potential of each renewable energy source in the world and in Slovenia is presented along with a history of its exploitation. This is followed by a description of technologies with a thermodynamic and/or hydrodynamic basis of energy conversion of renewable sources. Finally, a description of typical installations in the world, and in Slovenia, with the experiences gained during their operation is given. Each chapter ends with a list of the harmful influences resulting from the construction and operation of devices that use renewable energy sources.
