Summary

The aim of the survey is to draw up a simple list for refrigeration specialists of the main refrigerant options they have for an installation today. The IIR began the survey in early 1997 and published first results in IIR Bulletin 97-5 (see ref. 99-0795), with answers collected up to June 1997. Since the situation may evolve quickly, updates have been announced, and this is the first one after six months. Additional companies have been surveyed to extend the results, especially in the air conditioning sector, which has been found to be the most sensitive to refrigerant changes. Refrigerating unit and compressor manufacturers, as well as OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) have been surveyed. Heat-exchanger manufacturers have been questionned as well, but it appears that the introduction of new refrigerants like HFCs has not led to major equipment modifications (except HFC-410A because of higher condensing pressures). Actually, it is essentially the heat exchange calculations that have to be modified.
