Summary

This report first underlines the importance of the project in terms of European and international goals. It then suggests a series of improvements to fill the gaps in the Commission project. The following topics are examined: the two central goals pursued by the European food authority: to restore consumer trust; to implement the European model on the international scene; the two gaps in this regulatory project: a poorly defined mission, which might compromise its implementation; unclear interaction with national authorities in charge of food safety, which is detrimental to a full understanding at internal and external levels, of its action.
