Evaluation and implementation of R22 and R502 alternatives for transport refrigeration.

Summary

The paper briefly reviews the equipment requirements for transport refrigeration and then presents a detailed list of the criteria to apply when evaluating the performance (as well as related chemical and physical system interactions) of alternative refrigerants. The performance results of HCFC transition alternative refrigerants and HFC long term replacement refrigerants in transport refrigeration systems are then discussed. The benefits of using replacement refrigerants with performance characteristics similar to R502 and the compressor changes needed to handle HFC-404A are summarized. Finally, the evaluation of other refrigeration system components is discussed.
