Evaluation of refrigerants.

Summary

The author reports on experiments on a water-to-water heat pump system. The performance of LPG was the same as propane but better than HCFC-22, HCFC-407C, HCFC-404A and HCFC-410A. Both LPG and propane had higher COPs than HCFC-22 but with a small loss in cooling capacity. On a wide range of evaluation criteria LPG and propane had been identified as energy efficient and environmentally safe refrigerants. The performance of LPG was found to be an excellent replacement for HCFC-22 in air conditioning and refrigeration. However, care should be taken when using LPG as its composition may vary and it may also contain some sulphur/corrosive compounds. The possible effect of these compounds on oil and materials should first be investigated prior to its safe use in air-conditioning and refrigeration systems.
