Evaluation of zeotropic hydrocarbon mixtures in a Lorenz-Meutzner-cycle refrigerator-freezer.

Author(s) : TIEDEMANN T., KRUSE H.

Summary

Experimental tests and computer simulation results of an European refrigerator-freezer design using the Lorenz-Meutzner cycle are reported. Mixtures of several ozone-safe components with very low global warming potentials, mainly hydrocarbons, were used as working fluids and theoretically shown to improve COP by 15% over conventional design. A refrigerator-freezer was experimentally converted to the Lorenz-Meutzner cycle and had the same energy consumption as an unmodified unit with R134a, due to several design limitations. The composition shift during the on/off cycling was measured and compared to the charged composition, showing a shift of up to 18 and 25% for the on and the off period, respectively.
