Summary

Light commercial refrigerators working with HC have been considered as a valid alternative to systems working with CFC and HFC. In this work, a light commercial system using R290 as refrigerant is analyzed and a comparison with R404A is performed. Moreover, the effects of the use of low volume heat exchangers on refrigerant charge reduction is also investigated. As regards system design, the effects of refrigerant mass charge and of regenerative capillary tube length on system performance are analyzed. As expected, the comparison between R404A and R290 systems shows that the employment of the HC fluid allows to obtain better performances. In addition, it is possible to remarkably reduce the refrigerant charge in the R290 system by adopting low volume heat exchangers, without penalizing the system performance.
