Summary

The theoretical calculation and experimental analysis of R22, R417 and R 134a were carried out in air source heat pump water heaters. The results show that the heating capacity and COP of R417A are close to R22 compared to RI34a and the discharge temperature is 25 degrees lower than R22, the discharge pressure is also 0.17MPa lower than R22 on average. Although R134a possesses lower discharge temperature and pressure, its heating capacity is much less than R22. The suction pressure of R 134a is very low under low temperature condition, and the lubricating oil has also to be replaced. Therefore, R417 A is the more suitable 'drop-in' candidate than R134a to substitute R22 in air source heat pump water heaters.
