Experimental assessment of HC-290 as a drop-in substitute to HCFC-22 in a split air conditioner.
Number: pap. n. 11
Author(s) : SARAVANAN A. L., LAL D. M.
Summary
A widely used refrigerant in split air conditioning units, the HCFC-22 has to be phased out by 2030 in all Article 5 countries under the Montreal Protocol. Propane (HC-290) is an alternative for HCFC-22. A 5.25 kW Split air conditioner without liquid receiver designed for HCFC-22 was retrofitted with HC-290 and tested under DT, ETA, ETB condition. Under drop-in tests, 4 suction line lengths viz: 12.37m, 19.1m, 23.75m, 30.1m were considered. Considering safety norms & density of HC-290 the charge quantity for HC-290 was taken to be 50% of the original HCFC-22 charge. The results show that as the suction line length increases ,the refrigeration capacity of propane reduces by 18.6% for lower operating conditions and 10.0% for the higher operating condition. The power consumption with HC-290 was lower by 4.28%. The COP with HC-290 was 17.8% higher for the lower operating conditions and 10.96% higher for the higher operating condition.
