Experimental evaluation of natural refrigerant blends as substitutes for R-600a in a domestic fridge and freezer.

Summary

Under the domestic appliance category, the domestic refrigeration sub-sector is the major component, being in service more than two billion of refrigerators and freezers. Its global electricity consumption is estimated to be almost 4% and it is expected to grow in the following years. In the last decade, R-600a has been the refrigerant which the majority of these systems rely in (75% expected in 2020), as none of the other new refrigerants has matured enough to be energy-efficient and cost competitive alternative. Nevertheless, there are evidences that suggest that some refrigerants blends can enhance the energy efficiency of the R-600a. In this paper, the experimental results obtained in a domestic fridge and freezer working the blends R-600/R-290 and R-600/R-1270 as substitutes for R-600a are presented. The components and proportions of the tested mixtures are selected from a previous thermodynamic screening, where 55440 of refrigerants blends were evaluated and optimized in base of COP, VCC, glide and discharge temperature.
