Experimental investigation of a liquid chiller equipped with corrugated plate heat exchangers.

Summary

The paper presents the experimental investigation of a 10 kW liquid chiller, running with refrigerant HFC-407C and using corrugated plate heat exchangers. The behaviour of the evaporator is investigated in steady state and during start-up. The heat transfer phenomena are slightly linked to the level of superheat, and a mechanism of droplet impact on the channel wall enhances the mean heat transfer coefficient. Finally, the level of superheat should influence variation of heat transfer in the evaporator during start-up. Moreover, superheat instabilities appear in a precise range of mass flow rate between 191 kg/h and 200 kg/h in steady state. Physical assumptions are proposed to explain the data.
