Summary
A TRANSIENT FREEZING PROCESS WITH SUPERCOOLING IS DISCUSSED EXPERIMENTALLY, USING PURE WATER. WHEN WATER IS COOLED BY A COOLING SURFACE, A SUPERCOOLED REGION APPEARS NEAR THE SURFACE. AFTER A WHILE, DENDRITIC ICE SUDDENLY GROWS ON THE SURFACE AND SPREADS OVER THE SUPERCOOLED REGION. THE DENDRITE THEN BEGINS TO MELT AGAIN FROM THE TIP AND, AT THE SAME TIME, A DENSE ICE LAYER BEGINS TO DEVELOP ON THE SURFACE. THE THICKNESS OF THE DENSE ICE LAYER IS INFLUENCED BY THE EXISTENCE OF SUPERCOOLING BUT THE EFFECT DECREASES WITH TIME. THE THICKNESS WAS COMPARED WITH AN APPROXIMATE QUASI-STEADY STATE SOLUTION. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AGREED WELL WITH THE SOLUTION.
