Summary
Practical use of R32 has been studied to reduce the global warning impact of refrigerants for air conditioners. In this study, R32 refrigerant accumulated in the test room, 2.7m*2.7m*2.7m, was ignited by an open flame, and the severity was evaluated. The spread of continuous horizontal and downward flame did not occur and there was also found to be very small rise in pressure after ignition in a sealed test room. In discussions about the safety of R32, we found no continuous flame and negligible pressure rise due to low burning velocity of R32. Since HCFC phase-out program starts from 2013 in developing countries, R32 is the most hopeful refrigerant in the market of split-type air-conditioners to comply with this regulation, because it is much more efficient in high outdoor temperature under cooling conditions and has much lower direct global warming impact due to lower GWP and smaller charge amount than R22.
