Summary

Hydrocarbons are widely used as refrigerants. However, because of their flammability, these fluids are subject to very restrictive standards. The refrigerant charge is limited to 150g in premises occupied by people. This paper presents the standards applied to hydrocarbons and charge reduction tracks in the application of heat pump water heaters. Using the same base of refrigerant circuit and a tank of 200l, three types of condensers were tested: a tube with a D-shaped section wrapped around the tank, a roll-bond and a microchannel heat exchanger. The roll-bond offers the best performance with a charge of 224g with a COP of 3.17 and a 7h heating-up time from 10 to 53°C. With a charge of 150g, the heat pump water heater has a COP of 2.76 and a heating time of 9h and 7min. These results are promising for future developments in order to further minimize the refrigerant charge by working on the internal volumes of the liquid line and the condenser.
