Summary

Experimental study of freezing of water in moist porous systems has been carried out in a closed system. The two ends of the column have been maintained at -10 and 10 deg C, respectively. Temperature measurements have been done at fixed specified distances during cooling processes. Moisture content and effective thermal conductivity have been measured for each set of experiment, by oven dry technique and by probe method. It has been observed that water migration to the freezing front produces an increase in the moisture content at the freezing front. A steep rise in the moisture profile has been observed behind the freezing front. An evaluation of thermal diffusivity has been made using Stefan's problem approach.
