Summary

Evaporators for small and medium refrigeration systems, designed using reduced diameter channels, are a main focus in the development of compact refrigeration equipments. Moreover, new refrigerants are currently being tested to substitute HFCs. Therefore, the objective of this work is to experimentally characterize heat transfer and pressure drop during boiling of isobutane (R600a) in a horizontal mini tube. The test section was 185 mm long and had 2.6 mm of internal diameter. Experimental conditions comprised heat fluxes of 44, 63 and 95 kW/m2, mass velocities of 240 and 440 kg/m2.s and saturation temperature of 22°C. The results were compared to previous ones using R134a. It was possible to observe the influence of heat flux and mass velocity on the heat transfer coefficient and on the frictional pressure drop. The R600a showed higher heat transfer coefficients and frictional pressure drop. This behaviour is related to distinct thermophysical properties among refrigerants.
