Summary

R22 and R404A were mainly used on vessels until now, but these refrigerants are regulated and are shifted toward the mixture refrigerants containing R32. However, the global warming potential (GWP) is high in the current used refrigerant, it is inevitable that further reduction of the GWP is required. This study experimentally investigated the evaporation heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics using R454C which was the leading alternative candidate refrigerant and R32 as test refrigerants in a layered microchannel heat exchanger with a wavy microchannel geometry. For an inlet subcooling temperature of 5 K and outlet vapor quality of 0.9, the overall heat transfer coefficient of R454C was lower than that of R32, and the pressure drop of R454C was similar to that of R32. Although the overall heat transfer coefficient of R454C was lower than that of R32 for any vapor quality at the test section outlet, the difference between R454C and R32 decreased.
