Experimental study on the gas flow in a pulse tube refrigerator with two relief valves.

Summary

A pulse tube refrigerator uses helium. The refrigerator consists of a piston, pulse tube, buffer tank, and throttling device. An orifice can be used for throttling, but the authors adopted two relief valves instead of an orifice. The two relief valves were placed between the hot end of the pulse tube and the buffer tank. The authors measured the gas parcel displacement and pressure to compare the refrigerators with the two relief valves and with the orifice. They placed a light ball in the pulse tube; therefore, the ball visualizes the gas parcel displacement. In the case of using two relief valves, the indicated work is almost the same, and the maximum cooling capacity increased by 31% compared with the case using the orifice.
