Summary

THE OBJECT OF THESE TRIALS WAS TO ASCERTAIN WHETHER LATE SEASON AVOCADO VARIETIES COULD BE STORED AND MARKETED OVER THE SUMMER MONTHS. RESULTS INDICATE THAT THE VARIETY NABAL CAN BE STORED SATISFACTORILY IN CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE FOR 2 MONTHS. FRUIT PICKED IN MARCH AND REMOVED FROM STORAGE AT THE END OF MAY HAS A SATISFACTORY SHELF LIFE OF 5-10 DAYS. TREATMENT WITH THE FUNGICIDE SPORTAK 0.2% IS IMPERATIVE. WITH REGARD TO VARIETY REED, IT WAS FOUND PREFERABLE TO PICK FRUIT AT END APRIL-BEGINNING MAY. THE ADVANTAGE IS EVIDENCED BY THE SLOWER SOFTENING RATE AND LOWER PERCENTAGE OF DECAY. IT IS ESSENTIAL TO TREAT FRUIT WITH THE FUNGICIDE SPORTAK 0.2%. THE VARIETIES AIR VERED AND SHOMRAT REACT FAVOURABLY TO STORAGE UNDER CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE CONDITIONS.
