Feasibility study on R290 thermal management systems for BEVs.

Number: 1020

Author(s) : NOYAMA H., KOBAYASHI T., TANABE H.

Summary

One of issues about Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) is cruising range, especially under cold weather conditions. Electric heaters, such as positive temperature coefficient (PTC) heater, significantly consume vehicle battery power with the efficient below 1.0. Therefore automotive manufactures need heat pump systems. However, current refrigerant for automotive air-conditioning systems is R134a or R1234yf. These refrigerants are not always suitable for heat pump systems, especially under cold weather conditions. The paper objective is to study the feasibility of R290 coolant-based thermal management systems including battery cooling/heating and waste heat recovery of electrical powertrains for BEVs in view of performance and efficiency. As results, the authors have obtained the possibility that the system can improve the cruising range of the BEV by more than about 50% compared to the conventional electric heating system.
