Field experience with container refrigeration units retrofitted with alternative refrigerant and synthetic oil.

Author(s) : FLECK J. G.

Summary

Progressive R12 elimination poses problems for owners or users of integral mechanically refrigerated containers. The article examines the consequences of R134a and ester oil use and gives results of a twelve month pilot test, carried out on 20 different units. If the replacement of R12 by R134a (as well as the oil) is correctly carried out, operation is satisfactory, but there is a small reduction in output. When systems are correctly modified to cope with substitutes, this reduction in output can be avoided.
