Retrofitting to alternative refrigerants: how effective is it?

Author(s) : HEAP R. D., LAWTON A. R.

Summary

The Montreal Protocol insists on the use of new refrigerants for the cooling of containers. Generally, it is an accepted fact that R134a is the most suitable substitute for R12. Experiments conducted after this substitution are described, and performance test results are given. For 10 different units studied at ISO rating conditions, the refrigeration capacity loss varied between about 3 and 21%, at 50 hertz operation. Solutions to improve performance are examined as well as possibilities of using mixtures, especially the replacement of R502 by HCFC69S. The global warming problem is studied. Among existing refrigerants, R134a seems to be the one which contributes the least to the greenhouse effect, and refrigerant contribution in general is less important than that of energy production.
