Summary

Fish produced using aquaculture reached a level of 25 million tonnes in 1996. This quantity represented only 17% of total aquatic products in 1996. Salmon production is the fruit of Norwegian research conducted in the early 1960s. Salmon production rose from 100 tonnes in 1970 to 4000 tonnes in 1980 and 280,000 tonnes in 1996 and the technology used has become available worldwide. Shrimp farming was unheard of in 1981 and now accounts for over 25% of shrimp on the market. Production of Mediterranean species (seabass and seabream) was still in the experimental stages in 1987 (200 tonnes) but rose to a level of 50,000 tonnes in 1996, while the quantity of wild fish on the market remained under 10,000 tonnes. Turbot production rose to a level of 3000 tonnes while fished turbot sales were at a level of 10,000 tonnes.
