Summary

To improve the efficiency of CO2 at warm ambient temperatures, blending it with other substances like hydrocarbons is a viable solution. This modification alters the critical point of the refrigerant, enabling operation in subcritical conditions at the same warm ambient temperatures. One promising alternative is the CO2/propane blend. Furthermore, the CO2 blend introduces a temperature glide, which can enhance heat transfer in the evaporator.
The present article shows the experimental results carried out in a laboratory facility at warm ambient conditions (25 °C and 35 °C) and five secondary fluid inlet evaporator temperatures: - 5 °C, 0 °C, 5 °C, 12 °C for a 70/30 CO2/ propane mixture. This study compares the performance of pure CO2 with that of a CO2/ propane blend. It analyses the cooling capacity and optimal high-pressure behavior for each of these conditions. Additionally, a flammability study is carried out for the CO2/ propane blend.
