Geothermal district heating and cooling: heat pumps make optimal use of renewable energy.

Type of article: Article
Summary
The discovery of a large low-enthalpy geothermal water reservoir under the city of Vicenza in Northern Italy through an oil prospecting venture, opened up the opportunity to install a district heating system with low energy consumption. Although the geothermal water is at 67 deg C, this is insufficient for heating the city's commercial and residential buildings using their existing high-temperature heat distribution systems. Heat pumps are therefore used to obtain optimum useful heat energy from the geothermal source. Experience so far suggests that the system can reduce energy consuption by up to 60%, or 3885 megawatthour/year.
