Global warming and heat pumps.

Author(s) : BOUMA J. W. J.

Summary

The paper is based on an International Energy Agency analysis using studies of heat pump applications from around the world. The main finding is that heat pumps in use today, of which the majority are electrically driven with electricity produced from different primary energy sources, already contribute considerably to reducing the emission of greenhouse gases, in particular CO2. It was also found that heat pump technology offers a major opportunity for further reductions, enabled by improved performance, decreased refrigerant leakage rates, and the use of environmentally friendly refrigerants.
